About the role

Job introduction

We are recruiting for a Senior UX Design Specialist to join our Journey Experience Team.

If you’re passionate about leading the development of high‑quality UX deliverables grounded in insights and data, then this may be the job for you!

Who Are We?

Not just another building society. Not just another job.

We're the fourth‑biggest building society in the UK, and what makes us different is that we're a mutual organisation. We don't have shareholders; we're owned by our members.

Our colleagues say Skipton is a great place to work — and you could be one of them, bringing new ideas on how we can keep customers at the heart of everything we do.

Whatever your background and whatever your goals, we'll help you take the next step towards a better future.

You will be joining the Journey Experience team, consisting of 2 Service Design Leads, 4 Senior Service Design Specialists, 3 Senior Researchers and 6 Senior UX Design Specialists. Our core role is to shape and drive exceptional member experiences by designing simple, seamless experiences that deliver meaningful value for the business and our customers.

What’s In It For You?

Skipton values work/life balance and we are proud to support hybrid and flexible working where possible. Our newly refurbished head office offers a vibrant and collaborative working space.

We offer a range of benefits, including:

  • Annual discretionary bonus scheme
  • 25 days’ annual leave + bank holidays, rising by 1 day per year of service up to 30 days
  • Holiday trading scheme allowing you to buy or sell additional annual leave
  • Matching employer pension contribution (up to 10% per annum)
  • Colleague mortgage (conditions apply)
  • Salary sacrifice scheme for hybrid & electric cars
  • A commitment to training and development
  • Private medical insurance for all colleagues
  • 3 paid volunteering days per year
  • Diverse and inclusive colleague networks, including our Carers and Pride Alliance groups
  • A range of health and wellbeing benefits, including cycle‑to‑work and discounted gym membership

What Will You Be Doing?

  • Working as part of outcome‑focused product teams to design experiences that make our members happier and deliver value against our corporate plan.
  • Translating desired outcomes into clear UX activities, ensuring design priorities align with strategic goals and product roadmaps.
  • Using member insight, behavioural data and market trends to influence product direction, roadmap decisions and prioritisation.
  • Designing end‑to‑end journeys, flows and interfaces that balance member needs, technical feasibility and business outcomes.
  • Collaborating closely with Product, Engineering, Research and stakeholders to define problems, co‑create solutions and iterate quickly based on feedback.
  • Planning and conducting usability testing to validate concepts and improve designs.
  • Contributing to the evolution of our design system to support consistent, scalable member experiences.
  • Championing user‑centred and design‑thinking principles across the organisation, sharing best practice to strengthen design capability.
  • Setting and maintaining consistent UX standards, processes and tools to deliver outstanding digital experiences for our members.

What Do We Need From You?

  • Extensive UX design experience, with strong capability in interaction design, visual design and responsive/mobile‑first design.
  • Proficiency in modern design tools such as Figma, Sketch or Adobe XD.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, able to confidently challenge decisions and navigate complex stakeholder conversations.
  • Ability to turn complex problems into clear, intuitive and user‑centred design solutions that deliver value for members and the organisation.
  • Experience planning and conducting usability testing and feeding insights into iterative design improvements.
  • Analytical mindset — comfortable interpreting data, research findings and behavioural insight to guide design direction and prioritisation.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility standards (including WCAG) and inclusive design practices to ensure experiences work for all members.
  • Awareness of user research methods, service design and content design to support holistic end‑to‑end experience design.
  • Comfortable working in agile environments, managing design priorities and collaborating closely with Product, Research and Engineering teams.
  • Proven track record of delivering impactful UX outcomes at a senior level.
  • Skilled in creating prototypes, design artefacts and test materials, and communicating concepts clearly and persuasively.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, co‑design and ideation sessions that bring teams together to solve meaningful problems.
  • Ability to design for diverse user needs, including accessibility and assisted‑digital scenarios.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, able to build trust, influence outcomes and keep member value at the heart of decision‑making.
  • Collaborating closely with Product, Engineering and Research to define problems, co‑create solutions and iterate quickly based on feedback and testing.
  • Using member insight, behavioural data and research findings to inform prioritisation and influence product direction.

Oleh, Associate Data Engineer

At the moment, I’m working on aligning two Complaints-related datasets. This matters because complaints data gives us a clear view of where our customers are struggling most.

By spotting increases early, whether in a specific area, category, or customer group, we can respond quickly, focus on the right priorities, reduce friction, and ultimately improve the experience for our members.
