We believe that development doesn’t just happen in the classroom. Learning and development can take place at any time and in many different ways. From a classroom based course to coaching, mentoring and using forms of social learning, our blended approach supports colleagues to learn at their own pace and focus on particular areas of interest or development. We’ll talk about your objectives, agree a development plan to make sure you’re receiving all the necessary support. We also offer innovative online learning, and for some roles, the option to study for professional qualifications
Bite size learning opportunities, such as ‘Sharpen the Saw’ and ‘Learning Bites’ are also available and designed to inspire and inform colleagues across the Society to refresh or learn new skills and develop knowledge.
You’ll be encouraged to take responsibility for your own continuous development so it’s important you’re equipped with all the skills and knowledge you need to, not only achieve in your current role, but to also prepare you for future opportunities. We aim to understand what you want to do, where you want to be and how you can get there.
My Skipton Welcome is the first formal learning experience for all new colleagues. It’s a fantastic introduction to get acquainted, to understand more about the Society, our industry and most importantly our customers.
Our Aspiring Leaders Programme is an exciting development opportunity that prepares colleagues for the challenge of taking on a leadership role, helping them fulfil their future aspirations. Those who are successful in joining the programme are chosen from a number of applicants who attend a Development Centre from which they will receive valuable developmental feedback. Many colleagues have subsequently become leaders throughout the Society.
Richard Calvert, Customer Delivery Leader – Operations, believes strongly in internal development opportunities. Here he tells us more about the importance of the programme:

It is a really exciting and challenging programme that brings Head Office and branch employees together, helping to develop future leaders and align leadership behaviours throughout the Society.”
A key objective of the programme is to develop leadership capability across the Society to support our values. One major focus is the building of great relationships, particularly between Head Office and our Branch Network to support One Team working to benefit our customers. Colleagues are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and identify goals suited to where they are on their own leadership journey. The blended approach truly complements the concept of authentic leadership. Skipton Building Society doesn’t develop ‘identikit leaders’, but we help colleagues become more aware of their own strengths and development areas and encourage them to be the best they can be.
